See: Azrael (Abraham Arlington) Alternate Versions Batman: Curse of the White Knight He, and all his successors since then were driven insane by it. Sir Geoffrey de Cantonna was the first knight to don the Suit of Sorrows for the Order. These armaments were passed from one generation to another since the crusades. These Azraels wore mystical armour called the Suit of Sorrows, and wielded the Sword of Sin and the Sword of Salvation. This treatment drove Michael insane, and lead him to joining the Order of Purity, another splinter group which also called their champions Azrael. Originally, he was intended to be part of a program for Police Officers in Gotham City to create replacement heroes for Batman should anything ever happen to him. Michael Washington Lane was an ex-cop who gained enhanced strength and reflexes after being experimented on by evil scientist, Doctor Hurt. This lead to Batman having to escalate his physical rehabilitation with Lady Shiva to fight Azrael, eventually defeating the mad zealot and evicting him from the role of Batman. In one particular instance he murdered the serial-killer Abattoir and willingly allowed several hostages to die in the process. After Batman had his back broken by Bane, Azrael took on the Batman mantle only to prove himself a psychotic murderer who didn't care about saving the lives of civilians, only in punishing those deemed as sinners.

When he was a young man, his father died and sent him off to Europe to directly train under the Order.Įventually, Azrael would come to meet Batman who he idolized and wished to act as the successor to, frequently allying himself with the Batman Family in Gotham. Since his childhood, Jean-Paul was psychologically conditioned by his father and the Order to become his father's successor. I can’t say I know what is happening exactly, but regardless, this is a rewarding read all the same. The first Azrael in Batman comics was Jean-Paul Valley, a bottle-baby who was genetically engineered with animal DNA by his father, the previous Azrael. It’s a story that rewards readers who are seeking a complex and otherworldly feel in their superhero stories. Your interest may vary depending on how invested you are in these characters.Īrkham City: The Order of the World #2 introduces new players and a strong sense that something quite dark is happening in Gotham. It can make the reading experience almost too obtuse and strange, but it also feels deep and complex. There’s a dreamlike quality to the way characters speak and act, as if we’re taking in a fever dream. There is action, of course Azrael does some beating, but even then that is done in a more emotionally charged way rather than glorifying it. If you haven’t guessed yet, this is a very unconventional comic story. It’s unclear at this point, but one could see these two coming to blows, or maybe even working together at some point. There’s an interesting juxtaposition between the Ten-Eyed Man and Azrael as well - both seem to think they know things or are much more than just flesh and blood, but Azrael is more of a doer and the Ten-Eyed Man is more of an observer. Joy when he unhands her, or a revelation he has uncovered. Again, this character looks and talks in an unrealistic sort of way, but there’s some humanity still there on the page, be it a kindness he shows Dr. The Ten-Eyed Man gets much more time in this issue as well. It’s a work that could be studied to better identify what it does to the reader as they soak in its unnerving nature.

This simplification makes the identity of these characters seem raw, and yet the lack of detail makes the world feel ominous and dangerous. Jacosta Joy’s notes, the world around her is made flat due to the intentional lack of details and the flatness of Dave Stewart’s colors. The identity of this book seems to be defined by Dani’s unique art that simplifies yet somehow comes off as purely atmospheric even with the mundane. In the second issue, more Arkham escapees are explored and Azrael enters the story. The first issue introduced readers to a psychiatrist attempting to help a city heal after some of its sickest citizens - including the absolutely bonkers Ten-Eyed Man - escaped the Arkham Asylum explosion. That makes it great, especially for superhero comics.

Arkham City: The Order of the World is the kind of comic series that walks the line on the edge of something truly different.
